Two years ago today I drove through an ice storm and was pulling my new foster out of the front seat of a truck. She was a scared and growly Weimaraner who had a busted up knee from leaping through a window, had extreme anxiety, and acted as if she had been bullied on many occasions. A year later I decided to add her to my pack permanently and today, we're celebrating her "4th birthday." She has proven herself a truly dedicated Weim, a wonderful working and hunting Weim, and best of all, a wonderfully loving Weimaraner. Happy Birthday, Neva!

Neva and I haven't been getting along real well lately. She's destroying herself and her crates again and anything else she can get ahold of. I've been frustrated and short with her. So, we went for a walk to the library today and to visit the library gardens. I'm so glad I took her. A walk can solve so many things and get the good vibes goin' again. Nevie, my badass Weimaraner, that makes grown men cross the street with just a look and grumble.

Neva was born to be a lake dog! She loves to spend her time swimming around and jumping off the dock! She becomes more and more confident with each jump!

Hello All-

As many of you know, or have heard, Neva has "issues" or "snakes in her head" as I lovingly say :) Before coming to rescue she jumped through a few windows, ate a few cars, and destroyed a house. While she hasn't jumped through any windows since I've had her, she has destroyed many, many crates and other random things (walls, fences, doors...) She can't be trusted in a crate, or out of a crate- she literally goes ballistic with anxiety and fear- even with constant training and reinforcement. She is also a super apologetic dog at times, but in reverse can sometimes be to the point of aggressive and territorial towards people when she feels something is "off." Neva also has phases of hyperactivity where she can't focus and is very compulsive (especially seen randomly in our day to day routine and training) Needless to say, the last year and a half with her hasn't been the easiest! When she ran out of her, what I call- psycho drugs- a few weeks ago I was debating on whether or not to get her prescription filled again since it didn't seem to be helping much even with the training and constant reinforcement, but then realized that I never had her thyroid tested! We drew blood, sent it to Jean Dodds, and sure enough- Neva's thyroid levels are way below the minimum.

I guess I'm telling you this because she has no real "outward" signs of having a thyroid problem, or really doesn't show any signs that most vets look for or that you hear about. She is super active, has a great coat, is very healthy, and hunts like no other- but, her levels were all very low. Some of you have experience with this, and some of you that follow us work in rescue, not sure about everyone else, but thought I'd share!. Makes me feel kind of sad for all the Weims out there in rescue or who were given up or pts for something so easy to test for! She starts her meds tonight, and with luck, I hope to see a little bit of a difference in her mood and attitude the next few weeks!

I put Neva and Vera out in the yard because rain or not, they like to spend their evenings watching for birds and rough housing with each other. When I looked out the door, both girls were in my garden, which is a big NO! I yelled and Vera came bounding out with a lovely gift.

Neva had a blast at Nationals! I'm not sure if she enjoyed camping or busting birds the most, but she had a good time either way! When Neva wasn't screaming for rabbits or squirrels at the campground, or smoozing with her friend Meredith of Southpaw Weimaraners, she took a moment to earn her first JH leg! Neva also strutted her stuff in the rescue parade!

While Neva is still creeping a bit, and not holding her point as long as I'd like- I'm extremely happy with how she's progressing. She has a great nose, is an excellent ranging dog for the foot hunter, a wonderful retriever, and is extremely bold. What kind of asshole would tie her to the side of a shelter?

A year ago today, I drove to Indy to pick up my new foster. She was a snarky and grumpy gal with extreme separation anxiety. A year later, she's still with me, but now part of the gang. When I was filling out her ILP papers to start doing field work and hunt tests with her, I also made today her birthday. Heaven knows we've been through a lot (some days I'm not sure how it was possible!) but it's been worth the work and frustration. Neva thrives on attention, and has the drive and enthusiasm that would make the best of trainers envious. I've made a folder of Neva photos I've taken throughout the year as a sort of celebration of her life so far. Yes, she had a really rough start, but this girl has got places to go and things to do!

I realized the other day that even though Neva makes me want to scream on a daily basis, I would miss her if she left. We've come a looooooong way since she came into my home last January, and I'm sure our journey will only get better (if not more exciting, right?)

What a great weekend for Neva! She earned her first title, got to play with a bunch of Weims, stalked squirrels, ate ice cream, and learned a bit more about dockdiving! Whew! This girl can go go go !

Neva earned her first title this weekend through the Weimaraner Club of America. Her ILP number came in just in time!
For the Novice Retrieving dog title, Neva had to do two retrieves- one on land, the other in water. For the land retrieve the dog is set up in a circle with the handler. A bird (quail in this case) was then thrown, gun shot, and after it landed, she was sent after it. Neva did a great job marking the bird, running out to where it landed, and promptly bringing it back to the circle and placing it in my hand. On the next part of the test, she had to do a water retrieve of a duck. We haven't trained with any ducks, so I wasn't sure how she would be with the smell/taste. Neva was brought to the circle, the gun cracked over the pond, and Neva immidiatley knew what her job was. I sent her out, she gauged where the duck had landed and entered the water through some reeds and thick grass. She was a bit slow swimming out to the duck, but had no problem grabbing it and bringing it back in through the grass and reeds, and directly into the circle and to my hand! She did a wonderful job and was one of the two dogs that passed for the weekend (the other being my Sylvie!)

Neva's a butterfly! And completely focused on a squirrel not even 20 ft away- but, look! She's holding her sit- stay! A very hard feat for even the best of trained Weims!

Neva's training continues! No walk is just a walk for this girl, it's perfect training time!

Neva seems to think that all joggers, runners, people on bikes, squirrels in the park, should be chased! So, this is something that we've been working on and will continue to work on when the weather cooperates. Neva is also learning that sit means sit EVERYWHERE and that stay means stay no matter where she is. Neva walks very well on a leash, until she sees a bunny or squirrel that is, so we're also working on focus and eye contact. Neva is very unsure around children and kids of all ages, so right now we're just walking by them and she gets a jackpot of cookies is she looks at them then at me. She's doing very well and I'm completely smitten with this girl!

Neva had a blast at the lake over the weekend. She loved the boat rides, running after rabbits, and swimming. She even jumped off the end of the pier, but I think it was a bit of a surprise to her that she couldn't walk on water!

Neva LOVES going to agility and learning new tricks. Tonight she went to Vera's level 3 agility class and worked her little butt off! She ran a small but tricky course that consisted of jumps and tunnels, lateral jumps, and working away from me. She also had some wonderful sits on the table and slammed the teeter down a few times!

I just sent in Neva's bio for LWR's website so all the wonderful adopters out there can finally see her. I usually don't have a problem writing the bio's for my fosters- but Neva's was difficult. I already told everyone to yell at me and tell me I don't need another Weim!

Here it is:

It's easy to be jealous of Neva. She's funny, sassy, likes adventure, is competitive, and is good looking. She greets the mornings with her fabulous yoga poses, eats a healthful breakfast, then is ready to run and romp the day away. She takes her "jobs" very seriously and is always looking for something else to do. She loves to end the day with a belly rub or a good cuddle. She learns quick, retains what she's learned, and likes to show off and flaunt her stuff.
Neva (1.5 yrs old, spayed, UTD on vaccines) is looking for an active family and it would be a bonus if they were wanting to dip their toes into more extensive training and try to show her off in competition- agility, rally, tracking, hunting- you name it, she's game. She has been started on basic and more advanced obedience exercises, beginning agility obstacles, birds, and loves to use her nose to track. This girl walks the walk and talks the talk.
Neva loves having canine companions to romp with and chew on, but can be bossy at times. No cats, small furry pets, smaller dogs, or children for this girl. Neva would love it if her new owners were home more than they were away as she suffers from separation anxiety. While Neva listens well off leash, she needs to have a fenced in backyard and cannot be left alone in it (she can climb chain link fences faster than you can blink an eye to come looking for you!) Neva would thrive in a home that understands the needs of a young female Weimaraner, has training knowledge, and is able to provide her with fair, yet gentle leadership. It's hard not to give in to those big puppy dog eyes...

I finally was able to get Neva out on live birds this morning and she was a hoot! She met her first quail and even met her first bird launcher for fun!
I planted the bird in some thicker grass and walked her to the area. She sniffed around, but really had no idea what she as looking for until she found it. She had a quick point, chased the bird when I flushed, then retrieved it back! She loved the retrieving part and didn't munch or crunch the bird at all!

I picked Neva up yesterday afternoon in one of the worst driving conditions I have been insane enough to drive in. She's fitting in well, eating well, sleeping well, and playing well so far. She's a true lovebug and enjoys cuddling more than you can imagine.
